A Greek court has jailed the Captain and his 1st Officer for 16 and 19 years, after being guilty for the death of 82 passengers when their ferry[Express Samina] hit a rocky islet, in September 2000 nearby the coast of Paros and sunk.At the moment of the collison, the crew was watching a soccer game at the Tele.
3 Other members got 15 months till 8 years sentence, and 2 managers from the company Minoan Flying Dolphins, each 51 months for lack of caution.
Still lots of claims are deposit by the survivers[500] and families of the victims.

Here you can read the story from that accident:

Hmm in the UK they woulfd have probably got 100 hours community service and the company CEO would have had to wait a extra six months before his knighood came through.

Sorry Mr Fairr, just copied it over from another website.
It made me think of this mythical corporate manslaughter charge we are supposed to have in this country, don't think anybody has actually done any time because of that yet.,especially anyone, heaven forbid, from the board room

And we are complaining about how light the sentence is....

FYI, there's a programme on bbc tonight about the sinking of the Estonia.

The Sinking of the Estonia

Drama-documentary retelling the events of September 1994, when the Estonia passenger ferry, once a symbol of independence for the Estonian people, sank in heavy Baltic seas with the loss of over 800 people. Following the accounts of those who escaped the sinking ship and survived the seven-hour wait to be rescued, the programme illustrates how the decision not to decrease speed caused the ship to take such a thrashing that the car ramp opened, allowing water to enter the ship

I have seen a couple from this series and they seem to be more dramatic than necessary, but the documentary and factual side seems good.

Can we please stop doing threads involving Greek prisons.

Still getting nightmares from the last one. :\

I think Mr. Draper started the thread about the relative severity (sp?) of the sentence. Most local people believe they were punish too lightly since only two went to jail.
