Hello fellow pilots.
I'm trying to find out what flying and living conditions are like in Gabon. Air Service is looking for pilots and I'm trying to gather as much information as possible in advance of making a decision. What's life like outside of flying? Is internet expensive? What about social life? Cost of food? Etc.
Thanks!

Hi there flyintrim,

Firstly I can tell you that Libreville is bloody expensive!Everything from food to beer will cost you a pretty penny. If you don't booze too much I reckon you will get away with spending around $450 per month. Now if you booze every weekend well then you are gonna be adding around $200 on top of that. There are some clubs you can go to,every now and then, you will spot a hottie, but other then that be prepared to fight off the night fighters. With regards to accom, aircon is a must ,otherwise you won't be sleeping too well.
Air Service should be providing transport and internet, so you shouldn't have to haggle too much with taxi drivers.
With regards to socialising, get hold of the Solenta pilots, a good bunch, and you'll always find them keen on having a braai on their off day.
Hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Good luck:ok:

Putt for Dough pretty much sums it up.
A few years ago Libreville was the 3rd most expensive city in the world.Economy has slumped now and they still charge you the huge prices of old, stubbornly not brought the prices down to reasonable standards.
Accom at least $5000 a month, beer in night club $8.50 in local currency,Fresh produce extremely expensive $5 for a lettuce etc.
Air Service should put you up in accom, otherwise ask for big cash. Libreville one one of the better places of the darkest west africa to stay in. but unless you fluent in french....would tread lightly.
Personally-permanent residence is not worth it....contract work with time off is be viable
What aircraft they offering work on?
Head to the Tropicana for a sundowner......;)

Gentlemen, thanks for painting a picture for me. Air Service is looking for Dash-8 type-rated pilots. I didn't realise it was so expensive. Are there many other operators working out of Libreville? I understand there is a wide gap between the rich and poor, is this causing any resentment?
Take care.

Resentment ? Yes, since the beginning of recorded history...and before...

Most I've ever paid for a beer in my life was in Libreville. Some great places in Rue de Louise, but expensive. Then again there are some more reasonably priced places where you can enjoy a Regab or two.

There a lot worse places in africa than Libreville. Gabonese are pretty miserable people though.
