Here's an update on the strike:

Airport strike may be called off today

As the nationwide airport strike by the employees of Airport Authority of India (AAI) enters its fourth day, the workers are expecting a positive outcome from the Airport Authority Workers Union meeting at 10 am today.

The AAI employees, who are protesting against privatisation of airports, are keeping their fingers crossed as to what decision will be taken by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“The strike will be called off by 10 am as we expect the government to accept our demands,” said Pratibha M, a striking employee.

On Wednesday, the protest had resulted in a lathicharge by police outside Mumbai airport.

Four AAI employees are in a serious condition at Hinduja Hospital.

The airport loos, which had been cleaned by CISF jawans on Thursday, were not cleaned on Friday. When asked how much time it would take to clear the mess at the airport premises, an AAI employee said, “Ek baar kaam pe lag jaane do, poora safaai fatafat ho jaayega.”

Strike is over yesterday evening.

I am no sympathiser of strikes without reason, but in this case the striking employees had some reasons to protest. And this was no wild cat strike like the recent SAS sick out or the BA ground staff wak out over the Gate Gourment issue , the AAI (Airports Authority of India) employees were giving enough and more notice over the last few months.

There is a lot of "liberalisation" and "privatisation" going on in the Indian air transport sector. It is long overdue, without a doubt, but when the two largest airports in India is being privatised (two other biggies, Bangalore and Hyderabad has already been awarded to private sector a couple of years back), employees have a right to be genuinely worried about the future, esp when all they get is oral assurances about "job protection" with nothing in writing. Come to think of it, isnt "job protection" the first thing every management utters in such cases before getting on with the firings? Also as witnessed by Sahara- Jet merger, where a merger was allowed to take place without any insistence on things like release of slots etc (Easy Jet must be saying - what is new???), things are equally hazy in the case of airport privatisation.

BOM and DEL may have ben exceptions, but I find many of the other AAI airports like MAA well managed and a pleasure to use.
