View Full Version : Aviation photo murals?

I am thinking of decorating a wall at home with a big (2.7x4.0 m, to be precise) aviation-related photo mural (as if the real thing were not enough ;) ). For example, something with the clear sky above, broken or scattered clouds below, and the ground far beneath. A search in local shops and on Internet failed to reveal anything interesting. Has anyone seen something like this offered for sale, hopefully not too expensive? (Normally, this would be an 8-sheet kit). Thanks!

Why not go to the rasterbation (http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/)site that was mentioned on these very pages not too long ago and you can enlarge any photo you want.

Anton K, if you go to airliners. net and click on 'view all top rated photos' you get a stunning wealth of aviation pics.
A number of pictures are copyrighted, so to use them you can pay the photographer via the net.

It's really worth a look.
I only go there when I know I have nothing pressing that I need to do, because I tend to lose track of time.....

Also, I like your mural idea. The rest of the family would have kittens if I suggested it for a public space, but my wardrobe is already an 'aviation shrine', and one of the walls would look great with a mural. :ok:

Presumably, once you'd printed all the sheets and stuck them to the wall, you'd give them a coat of clear varnish or similar for protection?

I once had a plan to stick a cockpit poster on the wall opposite my toilet and decorate the bathroom like an aeroplane... But then I left university and got a job. :8

There was once a wallpaper manufacturer who made a scene(photograph, B&W) of a 727 front on during rotation. It was the width of a two car garage and as high. Very impressive it was. That was about 25 years ago though.

Well, finding a good image is not at all difficult. There are companies which will make custom printing of any size, but the price for a 2.7x4.0 m print will be some 700-1000 euros, while ready-made poster kits of this size cost from 30 to 300 euros. Here is an example:
http://www.roomzone.de/textil_tapeten_shop/Fototapeten-Blue.html (they are rather nice but don't have the size I need, and are at the costly end of the scale).
Could anyone recommend similar companies?

Well I assume that rather depends upon the subject of the photograph :ugh:

Certainly not as Wow! as a photo, but I had ONC charts [1,000,000:1] covering a wall of my office a few decades ago. The wall was about the size you mention. Offices had very high quality metal moveable walls and magnets were issued by the thousands by the storeroom. Either Australia or the USA would just fit. Tasmania tended to hit the floor. ONC charts were pretty cheap back then, but I wonder about today. Attaching by magnets allowed me to change the charts rather than live with the same set forever (or until my office was moved).

Europe is not really the right form-factor for your wall, being more "portrait" than "landscape" shaped.

You should get together with Avman. Rumour has it he's got half a DC8 in his. I'd hate to think what he does on rotation.:O
