Yup! According to our lovely  Department of State:

" As a result of the August 23, 2000 crash of a Gulf Air flight in the Persian Gulf, the U.S. Department of Defense has recommended that military commanders use air carriers other than Gulf Air for official travel. "

From: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1050.html

While they're at it, why not issue a recommendation to avoid:

[ insert just about any major airline that has had a crash with a contributing factor of pilot error ].

No Way are GF bad. After all, they've been around for over 50 yrs. Hopefully all the new " big " airlines learn't something.

Of course GF isn't bad. Just about every airline out there has had its fair share of unfortunate events. So as long as it isn't happening consistently, then there is no problem.

The fact that the DoD (article on Dept. of State website) would state to avoid travelling on GF simply because of this crash in 2000 is absurd.

AA lost an A300 in 2001... should they release a memo to avoid travelling on AA ? Of course not.

Thing is that GF gets in the limelight, coz people talk and are encouraged to talk, even a small issue. Others in the Gulf, you never hear anything, except maybe the JHB incident with EK. What about Qatari, what about Etihad, what about Kuwait, do they never have incidents? Re JNB,EK got away with it, but doubt it was "pilot error". Fact is, if it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone. You are right about AA. Same thing. Singling out GF as a carrier, NOT to fly with, is as you said, absurd. After all, they have more airline experience than just about all of the ME carriers. Most, if not all, have taken the experience GF offered, and had the benefit of that.

Very very OLD news!
GF got it's business back with the US DoD over two years ago! The Code-share with AA was put back on and the FAA audit passed.
Seems this web-site needs an update from the departments that are clearly not sharing information! Ah yes, this is the US of course and that sort of thing doesn't happen very often does it!
Stange that it appears only under the UAE CIS and not the Bahrain or Oman CIS:

As AUH are about to pull out, perhaps ETIHAD are behind this conspiracy! :ok:

There has to be an ulterior motive here for posting such out of date info - GF has certainly had its problems , but they are not alone here in the ME.
