On a 777 with all the new fangled personal video monitors, etc today from ORD into LHR. Is it just me, or are the new headsets a poor cheap imitation of the Ipod earbuds? They hurt like heck and I couldn't have them in for more than an hour at a time. Maybe I'm a mutant and they just don't fit me.

Give me good old fashioned over the head, hairdo disruptive earphones any day. Irritating to turn your head and have them fall out.

with earbuds, you're never going to get 'one size fits all'. The old plastic flat earphones in Economy were fine, and the Bose active ones issued up front are top banana for keeping all peripheral sound out - great for when you want a nap!

All phones/buds should be standard mini-jack stereo fitting - so, to avoid comfort problems, maybe you can take your own next time you fly AA. (assuming you've got some!)

American actively encourages you to take your own (in economy at least - the Bose ones up front are great) - if it's important to you then do so.
