It's a movie prop. There's a fair share of that type of stuff and activities at Mojave.

Sounds like a plausible explanation.

It was in the flick The 6th Day. It's been a while but IIRC there was some visual connection with MD Helicopters' NOTAR tech (either a sticker at the back of the hanger office or a 'real-life' 520/600/900N used elsewhere in the movie). Don't know whether Henk & co. were asked to help design the mock-up...

Pretty bitchin' too - went from helicopter to supersonic jet as I remember! Flew with a remote control if you wanted. Bad movie, but fun.

I have a near identical photo of that, sat behind the same hangar, which I took in October 2003. The hangar is at the back of Scaled's plant at Mojave.
I was also told by a local (a rotorheads member come to think of it) that it was a film prop manufactured by Scaled.

I've used it several times, to my amusement anyhow, in recognition quizzes since. Nobody's got it yet.

I know this is only a mock up for the film industry, but it is rather well proportioned and looks like it could do a real Job, no doubt it cost quite a lot to build, but in my opinion would look better on skids, with a logo saying
Robinson Rt88 Vulture ( the ultimate in Police Hardware).
But then;)

The good thing about this aircraft is that it turns into a Mach 1 jet in the cruise. Oh yeah!!!:E

There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that it's a Commanche replacement. None at all. Any connection with the Commanche is to be denied.
(and whoever took the canvas covers off during daylight is to be fired....)
