View Full Version : Laptop going extremely slow

My laptop over the last few weeks is becoming slower and slower and i'm trying everything I know to try and clear it out.

I've still got 8 gig of my HDD left free, i've defragged and done disk cleanup, i've done my windows registry via Easycleaner aswell as run and quarantined any spyware picked up with Ad-Aware.

All of my music and films are stored on an external hard-disk which I had defragged, cleaned up etc but still the laptop is painfully slow. As I write this I am typing faster than the laptop can write it and flicking between active windows is just painfully slow. Music and films stutter regardless of whether or not they are on the external or the laptop.

My task manager is currently showing me as having 51 processes, a CPU usage of 71% (that's with only one firefox window, one MSN chat window and the task manager itself open) and a commit charge of 376M/2460M (whatever that means).

I have Googled and Yahoo'ed my backside off the last couple of days. I've paused my anti-virus software (Avast), turned off all my Winamp and Quicktime-style programs that run in the background, but still to no avail.

I tried installing a couple of games which used to easilly run on here but they don't work... they're jerky and slow and take minutes to load... and that's on the lowest GFX settings. I tried them when installed to the laptop itself and to the external disk.

The techie guys here are my last hope as I don't know where on earth i'll take this to get it sorted... 'Dell don't sell in the shops' remember (:mad:ers)

Hi, Have you a prog called "HiJack This" you`ve got to many processes running and I suspect a lot of added unnecessary files, we need to get rid of them if you have the prog then run it and save a log file then post it here and I`ll see whats to be done. If you hav`nt go this prog then you can find it on the web its freeware or go here http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/#Top. Im a bit busy at the moment but i`ll sort it as soon as...

got your reply not really got time to go through it yet but i`ll post you a reply tomorrow if thats ok, I see Norton on your machine at one time all the registry values for symantec need to go for a start, then windows messenger and msn messenger unless you use said progs of course , all these slow your comp down. Meanwhile search on the web for the "Black Viper" web page this site will tell you what "SERVICES" you can safely disable...

kriss1000

Found Black Vipers services...

Gone through and now down to 45 processes after stopping all the services suggested.

Appreciate the help and no rush for a reply!

Many thanks.

For what it's worth, the problem although not being associated just with iTunes, is definately much much worse when the program is running, something it never used to do.

As iTunes runs now, playing in the background the CPU usage is stucky firmly at 100%

Joe, as an exercise, I wonder if it might be worth uninstalling iTunes completely and then benchmarkng perofrmance, before reinstalling for comparison? I seem to remember something like this a few weeks ago somewhere, but right at this moment, my memory is a little hazy.

windupdate is spyware also web-search

have you tried running spybot you can get it here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

also you could try running cwshredder from this site http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/CWShredder-Download-8114.html

also put your hijackthis in a folder of its own not on the desktop makes it easier to make and then locate the backup files

:\Max is correct

The first 3 items need to be fixed now all these are bad files.

The rest i`ll leave to your discretion just put a brief description to give you an idea.

If you want to uninstall windows messenger and msn messenger let me know and ill
post you the links to remove them, they are hidden files, i`ve just had a quick look
at your log file all your files are safe apart from these first 3...

you could try ccleaner to get rid of any junk left lying about on your computer.
can be a little scary on the first run though with the amount it finds and removes

I also use a programme called tune up utilities, have done so for some years and find it ok. If you are familiar with the registry or not it has a good reg editor and its really easy also lots of other cleaning tools and optimizers.

free trialware 30 days but its worth the cash
