For those of you who are "au fait" with this engine, can you answer a question?

They sometimes appear to windmill on the ground, is this because of the, well, the wind? or are they powered to keep oil flowing round the engine?

Not limited to RB's - any big-fan engine will do the same.

Unless you stuff a couple of chocks down the intake of course- as did some erstwhile--coughs--"engineers at a regional outpost" a few years ago---and leave them in when you come to start the donk

What causes the tick tick tick noise while the fans are freewheeling, do the blades have some play in them while cold and on the ground ??

You got it.

The RB211-535C has mid span clappers which clack as they fall over as the blade passes over TDC. RB211-22B and -524B are the same.
The newer RB211-535E and the RB211-524G/H have wide chord fan blades. These do not have clappers and do not clack.

Re cocks used to stop the fan rotating. It was done at the same operators main base too!!! When you are lying in the cold stream duct changing a componant, the clackerty-clackarty-clack drives you mad.

It's a brave man who uses cocks to stop the fan rotating!

The good Doctor is pefectly correct here--on both points--hence the, er benefit of a walk round prior to start up ? ;)

Obviously when I did it I used the approved RR fan gagging tool and made the appropriate entry in the tech log.

Of course you did Doctor, as indeed did I. The approved tool was always readily available in any good Line tool store as is only to be expected  ---;)

So let me get this right.

A "cock" is an approved "gagging tool" Dr I?

Time to send this thread off to JB methinks.;)
