Hi Gents,

Regarding ek accomodation, if you decide not to take company accomodation, does the airline provide an allowance ? if so how much and what is the typical rent on a 2 bed apartment these days in dubai ?

Plus - if you do decide to live out of company accomodation, does the airline still provide transport to and from work ?

I have heard of a project called silicon valley, where abouts is that exactly ? is that a site close to the city or in the middle of the desert ?

Appreciate any info,

Cheers fellas !

For a half decent two bedroom flat in the WRONG part of town that is Karama central Burdubai etc one shower and toilet . You are looking at 60 to 80000 dirhams per year circa 10 to 12K pounds per year!! yep you heard right!! for a good two bedroom flat, new modern maybe sheik Zyaed rd where most of the pilots stay in apartments supplied by the company you are looking at 80 to 110 K plus thats 12 to 18K pounds per year! add realistically 5 to 10K dirhams per year for water, electricity airconditioning. Also Greedy real estate agents wanting wanting wanting about 8 to 10 percent commission for SHOWING you the property!SO you are looking at say 90000 dirhams for a good 2 bedroom Apartment plus say 8 K for utilities per year, security deposit approx 5000 dhs and say ummmmm 5000dhs commission FEE to real estate you are looking at outlaying in your first year CIRCA 108000 dhs obviously if you choose to stay where you are the following year you do not have to outlay the deposit or any commission fees . However as what has happened here in Dubai rent is going up at nearly 20 percent per year!! The government has imposed a 15 percent year cap however it will cost you more to make a claim than it is accepting the price hike above the new legal rent CAP!! gotta love the system!! They introduce a law to control rent increases BUT it costs you much more to fight the Landlords!! Anyway i digress!

If you come here as an single FO you will receive a company flat 3 bedroom that is fair to good!! with everything supplied.

If you choose to take the company housing allowance they will give you approx 105000dhs for housing BUT you are ON YOUR OWN BUDDY!!

:ugh:

You could move out to the GREENS where a one bedroom flat will set you back say 65000 dhs. F!@#$$%ing outrageous.

Silcon Oasis is a developement of Villas 20 or so kms into the desert a fair way from anything!!

hope this answers your Questions dude!!

:ok:

Keep recovering!!

Standards are quite relative. Depends a bit on where you are from and what your expectations are. There is quite a large variation in standards because the company is having a tough time finding places for new employees. You could be in a marvelous place or you could be in a **** hole. It is all a fluke.

The place I am in with my family is only just good enough in our opinion. There is not enough room, the landlord did not provide any landscaping, this had to be paid by us. It is poorly constructed. The electrical system is not properly grounded - we get a little "buzz" from the dishwasher and the microwave when we turn them on... the walls are cracking, the plumbing is 'pretend' (not properly executed) and all in all it is living up to the Dubai standard of: "it only has to look good, it doesn't have to really work".

Consider your new oppotunity very carefully.
