And there was me wracking my brains as hard as I could to work out what on earth an "A" was and why the US Air Force would wand to drop one out of an F-22.

I think this refers to the improved radios when they tested this aircraft with the City of Hull (VR) squadron.

Apparently the original avionics were so bad, that the pilot answered every transmission with "Ay? What were that cock?"
