Sadly, a Chieftain was destroyed in a storm over the weekend in New South Wales with all 4 souls lost. The debris field suggests it came apart in the air in severe weather but of course that is all early speculation.

The Weekend Australian (a flagship national daily newspaper over here) carried the following absurd statement:

"The inexperienced pilot could not activate landing lights to see where he was going"

Can anybody beat that?

That bit was pasted into a report from an earlier, infamous accident at Whyalla. The point about the lights was an important one in that case.

Sloppy journalism not making that clear, quite possibly due to hasty or bad subbing but was entirely accurate.

Hi Guys and a salute to the Big PPruner!

A lot of flying blind in Africa too, just stick around in this nick of the woods! (hence the relevance of this posting in African aviation?)

A terrible thing anyway, condolences, but we as aviators should have "investigations" to prevent a recurrence, and where possible take evasive action before the inevitable! Anyway, great journalism here too!

MF;)
