Can anybody help me?

My father-in-law keeps pestering me for details of a helo he saw on a t.v. programme recently and I haven't got a clue what he is talking about.

Apparently he has seen a newly developed Russian Helicopter that is big enough to fit a "small town" in (tongue firmly in cheek) and has in the region of 12 (yes twelve) rotor blades!!

Any one know what he is talking about?

The biggest I know they have currently flying is the Mi-26 and this has eight blades. If you like I will post a pic of it on the forum here so you can see it. They did have a large tandem rotor helo a few years ago but this was side by side tandem rotor and it was probably twice as big as the Mi-26.

However from what I understand it doesnt fly anymore and is on static display somewhere in Moscow. Someone else might have up to date info on that though.

This is the Mi-26. Note the size of the boat is not small.

If you look at the specs of the Mi-26 it is one impressive machine. It's length is longer than a C-130 Herc, and lifts 20 metric tonnes. Saw some pics of a Cdn intl 206L that was hauled inside one. Simply incredible !!!!!

Q Man -
Depending on the show your Dad was watching he might have seen a glance of the Mi-6 "Hook", the military version of Mi-26. And the Rooskies even built the Mi-10 "Harke", what looks like a S-64 Ericson Skycrane on steroids. Looking at my I.D. wallchart of helicopter types the Mi-26, Mi-10, Mi-6 all look to be constructed around the same engine + airframe [I could be wrong.]
