Police found 46kg of cocaine with a street value of R21m in a box in the cargo section of Johannesburg International Airport on Wednesday.

One man was arrested in connection with the find.

"It is one of the biggest hauls of cocaine in two years at the airport," said superintendent Eugene Opperman.

"A big box came in from Sao Paulo via the cargo section, which police found suspicious," he said.

"They checked it out and found cream mixers - used on cakes - and the cocaine."

He said a man, born in 1960 according to what appears to be a false South African identity document, was arrested when he went to collect the box.

"At this stage, it doesn't seem as if he has a fixed abode," said Opperman.

He could not say if the man was on the same flight as the box.

He said the police were "wide awake" in spotting the box, and had not acted on a tip-off.

The man is due to appear in Kempton Park magistrate's court on Friday.

The poor mope who went to pick up the box for R20 is just that. Certainly nobody in the Organizational chain....... Im surprised these Cops?? dont beeper the package and follow it. I mean that remaining 46kg will probably hit the street anyway.. Why not take off someone involved in the scheme.

A woman has been arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine worth R5,8-million into the country, the South African Revenue Service said on Monday.

Spokesperson Adrian Lackay said the 31-year-old South African woman, a passenger on a flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was arrested at Johannesburg International Airport on Sunday.

"Members of the Sars anti-smuggling team, who are part of customs operations at the airport, intercepted the woman based on various suspicious activity indicators," said Lackay.

"Further routine examinations of her hand luggage and person did not reveal any drug concealment. However, it was established that the woman booked in 14kg of additional luggage destined for Maseru."

Inspections revealed that 13kg of cocaine was hidden in the suitcase, said Lackay.

"It was wrapped in carbon paper in what is believed to be an attempt to circumvent detection scanning equipment. Loose coffee granules were also found in a hidden compartment in an attempt to fool sniffer dogs."

The woman was expected to appear in the Kempton Park magistrate's court on Tuesday, said Lackay. - Sapa
