I did not know either of these men, however my condolences to their families, friends and colleagues...

Police have confirmed the two men on board a topdressing plane that crashed near Whangarei were both killed on impact.

Searchers found the wreckage of the Fletcher turbo prop shortly before 2pm on Wednesday in dense bush in Whangarei's Pukenui Forest, 4km from Whangarei.

Inspector Rob Lindsay says the bodies of the pilot Peter Beatty and his loader driver Greg Nash were found at the scene. But he says they are trapped beneath the plane and it may take two days to free them.

Both men were from Dargaville and worked out of Pukekohe for the Hamilton company Super Air, which operates 17 topdressing planes in the upper North Island.

The Super Air Fletcher Turbo Prop was last heard from at 11.30am on Tuesday when the pilot told Whangarei airport he would be landing in 15 minutes.

The aircraft was on route from south of Kaikohe to Whangarei airport for scheduled maintenance.
