its a f***ing outrage what they charge. 700 quid just to sit a CPL flight test. in the FAA system it's about 150 quid. i really cant see how the CAA justify their charges. it's no wonder GA is dying on it's arse in the UK.

- what exactly do they do when they issue a CPL? some bod checks the paperwork, prints the licence, and posts it to you.

- how does this cost 210 pounds?

in the FAA system it's about 150 quid.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves... In the FAA system if you use an FAA employed examiner, there is no charge, (not much slack either, ha ha). Its the FAA Designated Examiners that charge for checkrides.
Same with the written. Do it at an FAA site and its free. Do it via some school etc and they charge.
Its funded by the taxpayer and so far it works OK.

Its not just the costs. I have just been grounded for 6 weeks while my C of A was renewed.

£500+ too.

And they cashed the cheque as soon as they got it.

And they made it for 2 years instead of 3. And they want to make it yearly!

At this rate they will have no one left to regulate. I bet that wont stop them though.

Actually it would be quite funny to see the Pilots in the UK get together and do a job action. They could quite easily shut the country down and get some attention to their plight. Problem is just trying to get two Pilots to agree on the time of day would in itself be amazing.......

The paperwork for my ratin arrived two days agos after being away for 3weeks, the reciept for the cheque of £100 was recieved 2 days after I post my application off, bl@@dy crazy! The CAA FCL department could do with a sort out, I guess they're understaffed...

I have to agree it does take them a while I had an address change and that took them 5 weeks. I had to drive to Gatwick to get the new Rating put on, which was going to take 3.5 hours in the end they did it in two, but I was wondering why it takes so log to print a piece of paper.

Where a for the charges, they are a tad steep coupled with the new JAR hour requirements you have to win the lottery before you can attempt anything in regards furthering your career.

And what happened to grandfather rights?

When you want to upgrade from a Multicrew IR to a Singlecrew IR you have to have another CAA checkride.

The UK Government requires that the CAA’s costs are met entirely from its charges on those whom it regulates. Unlike many other countries, there is no direct Government funding of the CAA’s work.

AOPA have been trying hard for a few years now to get the CAA to tone their charging regime down, against heavy opposition from the airlines. Apparently to the point that the CAA set up a separate committee to review charges with just CAA staff and airline representatives on it.

Join AOPA, the more members, the more likely they are to be listened to.

I was over there just the other day, and I think I've figured out where all the charges we pay out go to... to subsidise the restaurant so that the people who work there can have a HUGE lunch for about £2.50!
