Helicopter pilot suffers broken bones in northern Alberta

FOX CREEK, Alta. (CP) -- A helicopter pilot suffered broken bones after his chopper crashed in an isolated bush area in northeastern Alberta on New Year's Eve.
The 27-year-old man from Cochrane, Ont., was extricated from the mangled chopper and flown to hospital by fellow helicopter crews in the area.

He was in stable condition in hospital in Edmonton with broken legs, a broken arm and several cracked ribs.

"He's extremely fortunate,'' said paramedic Robert Oswald.

The pilot and lone occupant of the helicopter was hauling seismic equipment for the energy industry when the helicopter went down in a deep gully about 60 km southwest of Fox Creek.

The man is an experienced pilot who has worked with Airborn Energy Solutions for the past 18 months, said company spokesman Allan Menard.

The company has flown some of the man's Ontario relatives to Alberta so that they can visit him in hospital. (Edmonton Journal)
