The Gannets main task was to secure shipping routes in the North sea and the Skagerrak in an anti-submarine warefare role. This example of the Fairey Gannet has being the Gate Guardian at HMS Gannet for a number of years and is still located at HMS Gannet

I thought (correct me if I am wrong 771 guys at Gannet) that the gate guardian at Gannet was an ex 849 NAS B Flt aircraft from the old Ark Royal air group, thus an AEW version not ASW.

Dear Oggin,

You are correct, the Gate Guardian at Gannet is an AEW aircraft. However, I’ll bite, there are some of us here who have never served on 771 NAS, and do not to this day. 771 is merely the Flights parent unit.

The unit is simply known as Gannet SAR Flight. Certainly 771 are the parenting unit but it is certainly not 771 Gannet SAR.

Back to the original topic...

Sadly the Gannet is falling to bits and becoming something of a liability. Because of the radioactive hazard disposing of it has become a real problem. It’s a shame a museum can’t have it so it may enjoy some form of preservation but now it subject to mindless bureaucracy this may prove impossible.

Of course when it was moved across the road a few years ago nobody knew it was an extreme hazard to health but thankfully nobody died.

So now it is being battered by Scottish weather and will probably suffer a shameful fate.

In the meantime the glow from the engine looks pretty at night.
