Confirmed - 5000 BA losses

Our correspondent says further losses as a result of last Tuesday's attacks mean job cuts could be widespread, affecting everyone from pilots and cabin crew to maintenance staff.

The BA announcement, he says, is not expected to be the industry's last, and some parts of the industry may not survive the downturn.

It is sadly only slowly beginning to sink in to a lot of the profession just how badly this event has impacted on our lives and how it will continue to do so.
The people who committed this atrocity have wrecked lives and industries worldwide. Perhaps people will begin to take them more seriously as the full implications are revealed, and hopefully realise that the extremists have to be isolated and neutralised. If that means putting them behind bars well and good, if it means more direct action has to be taken we all may have to accept that they have chosen to make war and meet them in war.
The massive losses sustained throughout the airline industry is a wake up call to every one of us. Get involved because you are already involved whether you wanted to be or not

This link contains the same info now as the original link by rustbucket, as the BBC updated the page after the press announcement. Just says 7000 will be all inclusive total, i.e it includes all the 1800 mentioned already. No breakdown of from which departments. Rumours were that some of the grounded ac will be 742 ?? Not good for anyone in any airline.

"British Airways today announced a series of measures to address the anticipated reduction in demand from passengers following the tragic events in the USA last week.
Following a detailed review of the business,the measures include:
A reduction in flying of 10 per cent,in addition to previously announced reductions.
The withdrwawl of 20 aircraft from the British Airways operation.
The loss of 7000 jobs.
The impact of these changes on British Airway's network and schedule will be announced in due course.

Chief Executive Rod Eddington said today "We face exceptional conditions which have forced us to take very tough decisions ".
"The tragic events in the USA will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the demand for air travel in the months ahead.We have taken the necessary steps to curtail expenditure and sadly to cut our workforce.Wherever possible we will try to achieve these cuts by voluntary means.We are currently in consultation with our unions."
"Despite the difficult market,our balance sheet remains strong and we are in a well-established business.However,we must act now to protact British Airways for the long term."
A reduction of 10 aircraft from the long-haul fleet will be achieved initially by advancing the retirement of the Boeing 747-200 fleet from Spring 2002 and then by withdrawing other wide-bodied aircraft.Six Boeing 767's and four narrow-bodied aircraft will be withdrawn from the short-haul operation."

With regard to LGW,Ten 737's will be leaving the Eog fleet.Six are to replace 767's at LHR and four are just leaving due to changes in capacity.
This is FACT,from Rod Eddington himself.I am not joking,as i have just been briefed by a senior BA manager !
