SAA yesterday also outlined the agreement reached with trade unions to improve employees’ working conditions. Mlenzana said the deal would add R35m a year in costs over the next three years.

Under the agreement with the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union and United Association of SA, the rest period for cabin crews on long-haul flights has been extended from a day to two days.

The meal allowance for cabin crews on international flights has increased to $107 from $99, while the domestic travel allowance has risen to R150 from R135 a person.

The retirement age for pilots has been extended to 63 from 60, in line with international benchmarks.
