I understand a (moving) THY Turkish A340 hit a (stationary) American Airlines B777 at Heathrow this morning causing significant damage to the 777.
The A340 received only minor damage to its wing & departed back to Istanbul this evening

I gather the 777 was lining up for departure, when the 340 (next in line after the 777) continued rolling and struck the Boeing in a couple of places (elevator and wings).

Significant damage to AA 777 7AM, elevator split in two, and wingtip removed. Nav light assy was embedded in the A340 winglet. Also possible structural damage to the aft spar of the horizontal stab. For some reason the AAIB aren't interested in investigating. Looks like the Turkish moved without ATC authorisation. Incident happened at the hold for the runway where the taxiway splits into 2 holding areas. BA are doing the repairs, going to cost Turkish a few pennies i think!:\
Where did you hear that?
Turkish was told to continue past United when there was room to do so, and he was cautioned again as he started moving regarding wingtip clearance.

Damaged AA 777 is currently parked in BA'S North Pen Hangar, left hand elevator being removed, new one in box awaiting fit. L/H wingtip repaired and awaiting fitment.

So when they say "wingtip clearance is NOT assured" on the ATIS, they really mean it?

it is alledged that the Turkish aircraft was pushed back on stand, speed taped up then took off for home...????

If it's just winglet damage then that is entirely plausible. Remove the winglet, speed tape up the end of the wing and away you go!

Hey, if it's stuck and supposed to move, give it some WD40. If it's moving and not supposed to (or fallen off), tape it up. Aircraft maintenance 101. :O
