Search mounted for ultra-light plane

AN ultra-light aircraft has apparently ditched into the sea off King Island in Bass Strait.

Tasmanian police said they received a report about 12.30pm that an aircraft had crashed into the sea in waters between one and two kilometres from King Island's Currie Golf Course.
"The aircraft involved is believed to be an ultra-light," police said.

Tasmania Police and Australian Search and Rescue are co-ordinating a joint response to the sighting.

A police launch is in the area, with no sign of wreckage.

Two additional commercial vessels are attending from Currie, and a fixed-wing plane is circling the area.

A REX commercial airline flight has been directed to the area and the Westpac Search and Rescue Helicopter has been dispatched from Hobart.

A MYSTERIOUS unidentified object, believed to be an ultra-light aircraft, was seen off the King Island coast in Bass Strait today.

Australian Search and Rescue spokeswoman Tracey Giggins said reputable sources had told authorities they thought they saw an ultra-light aircraft "go over the shoreline and disappear" about 12.30pm (AEDT) near Currie.
However, to date, no aircraft are unaccounted for and no persons have been reported missing.

"There were a number of people - quite reputable sources - and we got search and rescue fixed-wing aircraft to circle the area," Ms Giggins said.

She said two search and rescue helicopters and two local fishing vessels helped search for the unknown aircraft.

No aircraft was found, no missing people were reported and no aircraft were overdue, Ms Giggins added.

"A thorough search was made in the area of the sighting but all possibilities were exhausted.
"There were no overdue aircraft in the air in the area."

Victoria Police spokesman Senior Constable Wayne Wilson said Victorian rescue police helped with resources after an SOS from Canberra.

"We assisted Australian Search and Rescue with a police helicopter, providing them with resources for the search," he said.

A REX commercial airline flight also searched the area and the Westpac Search and Rescue Helicopter was dispatched from Hobart.

Tasmania Police's Sergeant Paul Steane said search attempts proved fruitless.

"Nothing was located and the Tasmania Police Westpac Rescue Helicopter has returned to Hobart," he said.

Why wasn't the cast and crewof Neighbours on board that DC3?:hmm:

On the day of ( or upto a few days before?) there were photos taken in the late afternoon of unidentified activity ,I think it was along the the west coast of YKII.

I thought something would have been found and reported by now of the recent goings on?
