...any war

Seeing as how market forces dictate prices etc etc

How about

Instead of asking Congress for several hundred billion dollars, what if we passed the hat around, then those people who wanted an expensive war could chip in for it and when there was no longer any budget for it, it'd be over.

Likewise, all volunteer armed forces who had the option of participating in or passing on each and every operation and could quit when ever they wanted.

If 'the market' is the most efficient arbiter of resource allocation, then why not apply it in this case as well?

Microsoft would likely use their enormous cash-resources to nuke China and maybe a few other places as well... :(

The money would still be found, Onan. The government would not have to resort to chook raffles. Donations would become tax deductible, all the dodgy foundations that currently exist would find their funding migrating to military causes, and all the genuine charities that are at the moment supported by philanthropists would find the same thing. Some things are of paramount importance to the smooth running of a major economy and the military is one of those things.

That amorphous anthropomorphic mass called "the market" has its own built-in set of parameters, sine qua non.

Yeah - ours has all the fruit 'n veg at one end and kiddies clothes up the other... don't mess with it coz you'll only upset the natives.

Recommend you all read "Catch 22" for how a war can be fought profitably....including attacking your own side for a consideration from the "enemy"

However, one could argue that war was the ultimate expression of capitalism anyway (the side which consumes resources fastest wins)

Yes- take this further! Instead of Western Governments giving 'aid' which is really taxpayer raised monies passing through Government hands (at added expense), cut out the middle man. Forbid all forms of Government charity altogether. Let private individuals who want to contribute to rich third world leaders bank accounts pay what charity they like instead of unwillingly funnelling it first through civil servants hands direct to African dictatator's Swiss bank accounts! I like it! My taxes could be lowered not having to keep Africa afloat singlehandedly.

That's how we did it in the Middle Ages . . .
