Today29th Oct, Aer Lingus are retiring the last of their two B737s which ends a long association with Boeing. Boeing aircraft have served Aer Lingus well over the decades and I hope Airbus can show the same reliability as the Boeing did. Many a pilot was very fond of the 737.

Have sat in the back of these for many years and tried to read the writing on the EI seat covers, which for those who do not know have sayings of Irish poets etc written in a very scrawly, closely-printed handwriting embroidered into the fabric, black writing on a dark green background just to make it harder to read.

Well the old EI 737s have a new life with Pulkovo Airlines in St Petersburg, Russia, who I also use. Guess what, the scribbles of James Joyce and Co are still there, even less understandable to the Russians than they were when crossing the Irish Sea !

The first EI Boeing was a 720 which arrived at the end of October 1960, so they have done exactly 45 years with the company. But as Aer Lingus started off with Hatfield-built de Havillands in 1935 and got rid of their last Hatfield-built 146 only a couple of years ago, not far off a 70-year history, Boeing have been beaten in the manufacturers longevity stakes by many years.

WHBM - there's always the longhaul order... although if Airbus can't sell EI A350 with all its existing A330 infrastructure it has some problems...

They got their first 737 in March 1969, all of 36 years ago.
