Ozjet closer to spreading wings
October 28, 2005 - 8:54PM

Australia's fourth domestic carrier is closer to taking wing after getting a certificate of airworthiness on its first Boeing 737 aircraft.

OzJet chief executive Hans van Pelt said getting the certificate from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) was a major step in the final stages Ozjet's application for an Air Operators Certificate (AOC).

"OzJet is very proud to have reached this important stage in its development and looks forward to continuing to work with the thorough professionals at CASA towards the finalisation of our AOC in the near future," Mr van Pelt said.

The airline, founded by aviation and motoring racing identity Paul Stoddart, hopes to launch its all-business class domestic service in the next few weeks.

It has secured agreements to operate at Sydney and Melbourne airports, locking in both ends of the route the airline will use when it launches.

Ozjet said the airworthiness certificate signified approval of its Boeing 737, registered as VH-OZQ as well as its system of maintenance and its maintenance and engineering control procedures.

The airline is hoping to have its second 737 registered soon as VH-OZU, a third 737, from Mr Stoddart's European Aviation fleet is expected to arrive in Australia in early November.

Ozjet will initially have eight flights a day in each direction between Sydney and Melbourne.

The airline plans to expand its fleet to up to 12 aircraft with services to Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane by mid-2006.
