Can you really call Ascension an RAF Station ? Stretches the imagination a little doesn't it.

I have a relative wot lives on Ascension Island. Apparently I can send a letter to them at the following address:

<Their name>
Atlantic Ocean

At least that's what they said. It's cos all the mail goes through there anyway. Supposedly.

I have no idea if this post has any relevence to this thread...because I get 404d as well :ugh:

Unless you access this link from the military intranet, you will not get access to it.

This is more or less all it said

RAF STATIONS ABROAD

Location & Postal Address

RAF AKROTIRI British Forces Post Office 57

RAF ASCENSION ISLAND British Forces Post Office 677

RAF GIBRALTAR British Forces Post Office 52

MOUNT PLEASANT AIRFIELD British Forces Post Office 655

...and I'm not even sure if MPA (or is it MPC) counts an RAF Station anyway .......:(

Yup, thats what it says....But I reiterate....you can't call Ascension an RAF Station....its not really is it? To call it an RAF Station stretches the imagination a tadge eh?

For info.

"The inaugural edition of Spirit of the Air, the magazine of RAF Ethos and Heritage has been published and is available now.

Sponsored by the RAF Ethos and Heritage Steering Group, Spirit celebrates the RAF, its distinctive character, spirit, attitude and traditions and aims to inspire personnel through a greater understanding of the history, traditions and heritage of the RAF.
It underlines the idea that heritage is not just about looking over our shoulders at the past. It is about understanding the lessons gleaned from previous experience and using this to build foundations for the future. In this way the Moral Component of Fighting Power is developed.

The magazine contains a wide range of articles including personal stories, descriptions of historical artefacts and items about developing policy. You can learn about the history of RAF Northolt and the Grahame-White Factory, about force development in the RAF and you can brush up on your service slang.

There is also a quiz to test those who think they know their RAF aircraft."

Aside from the Eurofighter on the front cover, I can't find that many references to 'the RAF of the future' and as for the descriptions of historical artifacts, many are still flying...

DB,

Apart from the poor link on my part (sorry), this thread was, I suppose, instigated by me having read the one about APCs etc. I didn't seem that long ago that we had such a variety of overseas postings to choose from. I was surprised (although I should have guessed) that we had so few actual permanent overseas bases left. FOUR! Incredible really.

Although it had already gone when I joined, it would have been fun to go to RAF Gan in the Maldives. I paid a fortune to go to the Maldives on my honeymoon. And to think it was a 'punishment posting' for some.....

RAF Ethos and Heritage steering group?????

Ethos is being steered towards destruction at an alarming rate!
Who are this group? Methinks they are completely out of touch.

I thought MPA was simply the post-grad field phase for DIOT? :uhoh:

The inaugural edition of Spirit of the Air, the magazine of RAF Ethos and Heritage......
It is about understanding the lessons gleaned from previous experience So when will someone understand and learn that we don't need any more glossy sodding magazines?

Yeah whatever....
"U need 2 know"
I mean, was some junior wag at Main Building having a laugh a CAS's expense?

"Sir ! Sir! I've got this brilliant idea to put you in touch with all our younger personnel...it's called 'yoof speak' and will make you appear twenty years younger and completely 'street' aware"

"Ah Bloggs, you the main man, this yoof speak idea rocks fat ones. Reeeeeeeeeespek-taaaaaaah!"

He'll be wearing his SD hat backwards next.
:hmm:

Maybe some "gansta rapper" with 'doggy' or 'doopy' or something in his name could rewrite the RAF march?

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought RAF Gan was on the Island of Masirah, between Oman and Iran, rather than the Maldives.

Ah... proper unaccompanied tours.... 6 months there, a month at home on leave, then another 6 months....

...no telephones (not even 20 mins a week!), no e-mail and no R&R every 2 months ..... even had a postal strike when I were first at Sharjah......

... and you tell that to young folk today ..........;)

I did not think of it was a punishment posting in the '60s.
By the way, at that time there were a lot of unaccompanied postings in the RAF;
Aden (Active service) - Khormaksar, Steamer Point
Arabian Gulf - Sharjah, Masirah, Riyan, Salalah, Muharraq
Indian ocean - Gan
Borneo (Active service) - Labuan, Kuching, Tawau
Canada - Goose Bay
to name some. They were mostly 12/13 month positings. If you were on a 13 monther it included leave in the UK. Khormaksar and Steamer point were 2 years for singlies. Most people copped it for at least one of the above, some unfortunates did 2 or even 3 tours !!!!!!
Those were the days. We knew how to whinge but we kept it to the NAAFI bar.

PS. 4/6 months - Cooks tours.

Punishment?
There was a queue a mile long to get there.

The "Not Having" island was no punishment believe me. I'd give bits of myself to do that tour again. I reckon it's the one posting of which people can truly say "happy days".

The "Not Having" island ... but not always "not having" .....

Allegedly some Comet/Britannia Loadmatresses (allegedly) had some profitable (alleged) sidelines on stopovers ........:E

... allegedly that is ......

I understand that the SMO at Gan was once somewhat surprised to have to deal with an airman who'd been there for quite a while - and who had suddenly come down with a dose of the clap.

After treating him, the obvious question was asked - HOW?

It seems that he'd DCO'd with some Major's wife on a stopover during her trip back to the UK after visiting him in Hong Kong...
