Good to see the Royal Navy going to such lengths to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. The TV shots of what looked like the entire Admiralty standing to attention on the deck of HMS Victory in the pouring rain reminded me of those war movies with someone like John Mills on an open bridge with just a dufflecoat and mug of cocoa to keep warm when getting a faceful of North Atlantic.

One hopes that after the parade, all went below for hot buttered rum and the odd twist of rough shag?

At the banquet tonight, will HM order the Fleet to 'Splice the mainbrace' to mark the occasion - as she did after her Golden Jubilee visit?

Show some respect please. Am on the Queen Mary 2 out of NY today and the mainbrace was spliced at noon "To the immortal memory". Adm (Retd) Tony Norman is on board and he gave a most entertaining tribute to the great man and we had a snifter afterwards. Nelson changed the course of history for quite some time after Trafalgar. The irony is that more British sailors lost their lives in the storm that followed than in the battle itself.

Excellent Trafalgar Dinner at a certain establishment last night. We should certainly continue to celebrate Nelson, Collingwood and our country's outstanding seagoing tradition. And the RN throw great parties!

I watched some of the live coverage from HMS Victory, which was very good except for the BBC female presenter's reference to Nelson being 'taken downstairs' after being shot. I'm sure that the crew would have taken him 'below decks'. So I spent the next half hour waiting for her to mention HMS Victory's bedrooms, toilets, kitchens, dining rooms, left and right sides, front and back, etc. She let me down though. So the TV licence fee is still justified..............just.

How politically incorrect. The RN have been at great lengths to state that they weren't "celebrating" a victory over the enemy, but remembering those lost. Or at least that's what 1SL said on TV yesterday.
