Westland Helicopters, in partnership with CDC Systems UK Ltd, has secured a key contract worth over £100m for the UK BOWMAN programme valued at over £1.5bn. This award consolidates Westland Helicopters’ position as a world leader in its fields of expertise which will provide unique capabilities in the management of the BOWMAN programme.
Westland Helicopters, one of the major partners with CDC Systems, will provide Aircraft Conversion, Training, Integrated Logistic Support and Land Static Platform Conversion.
BOWMAN is a secure digital voice and data communications system for the UK Armed forces based on internet protocol. It will include a land-based command and control system and provide the infrastructure to support all digitization applications over the next 30 years. Initial capability will be within 24 months, all 18,000 vehicles will be equipped and all 60,000 service personnel will be trained on BOWMAN by October 2007.
The programme will secure around 120 jobs in Yeovil, Somerset over a five-year period, providing high technology training systems, communications systems integration and support services. The jobs will largely be filled by existing Westland employees (in some cases through re-training), securing existing high technology jobs in Yeovil and in some cases additional recruitment will be necessary. Further jobs could be secured at Westland’s facility at Weston-Super-Mare. These high quality jobs will maintain Westland’s leading position in Training, Aircraft Conversion and Support Services and will provide opportunities for future growth.
As the UK’s principal Helicopter Design Authority, Westland Helicopters will provide CDC Systems UK with aircraft integration design, installation and conversion expertise in support of BOWMAN airborne conversion requirements. With over 50 years experience in Integrated Logistic Support (ILS), Westland Helicopters, in close partnership with CDC Systems UK, will manage the logistic support design for BOWMAN. As a proven supplier of advanced training solutions together with innovation in e-technology, Westland Helicopters will provide an integrated team with the requisite skills, knowledge and experience of complex military training systems to deliver a training solution, utilising actual BOWMAN common operating environments in desktop simulations. By drawing on its extensive experience in both engineering and training solutions, Westland Helicopters will also conduct BOWMAN land conversions of communication and training sites.
The selection of Canadian technology further improves the equitable exchange of UK and Canadian aerospace business. Canada has purchased the AgustaWestland Cormorant search and rescue helicopter and are considering the potential selection of the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) variant of Cormorant for their Maritime Helicopter Project (MHP). The UK Government’s choice of Canadian technology for the BOWMAN programme with UK manufacture, supply, support and training bodes well for future business partnerships between the UK & Canada.
