Passenger dies at Airport
Falls when engineering vehicle rams ramp
by Norman Palihawadana

A passenger disembarking from a SriLankan Airlines’ flight at Katunayake airport died yesterday after falling from the ramp when a maintenance vehicle knocked against it.

"The passenger has been identified as Ms. Maskanah Binti Jejen, an Indonesian national," said Deputy Airport Manager, S. N. Salgado adding that the vehicle involved in the mishap also belonged to the SriLankan Airlines engineering section. Investigations are being conducted, said Salgado.

He said the SriLankan Airlines flight UL 316 from Singapore had arrived in Colombo at 10.42. The mishap had occurred when a vehicle of the SriLankan engineering department had knocked the disembarking ramp, bringing the passengers crashing on to the tarmac.

He said five passengers were also injured in the incident.

According to Katunayake Airport police who are conducting investigations, the incident appears to be the result of gross negligence on the part of the ground staff.

This is the second incident during the last few weeks where passengers faced life threatening situations. The previous incident ended up with one passenger falling to her death when the escape chute of another airline gave way during the emergency exit due to a bomb alert.

Meanwhile the person who had created a bomb hoax last week at the airport is being questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department. The suspect, an air hostess, is believed to have ‘alerted’ the airport so that in the ensuing melee she would be able to skip the flight and attend to ‘more important’ matters at home.

Talking about management, is it true a manager at the airport has been sacked for making a bomb threat?
Saw that in one of the papers.:uhoh:

A question about the aircraft that was called back.

Since it had been 45 minutes in the air, why didn't it divert to India? Is this standard procedure ?:hmm:

This resulted a fatility etc

This implies that the UL FA was responsible for the death of a passenger evacuating a SV flight?

The police are still looking for the person who made the SV bomb threat.

The UL FA made a threat on a UL flight she was rostered to be on.

Hey, ATC are government servants; they need time to make decisions. ;) . At least they didn't ask the caller to call them again next week. :D

Easier, yes, but what about safety?

Did the caller say the bomb would not go off for another few hours? Is it that the crew themselves believed it was a hoax? True, it's cheaper to come back to Colombo, but shouldn't they go to the nearest airport?

"Well end of the day Crew did a good job for not letting the company down . . . "

I agree that the captain had the interests of the company foremost when he decided to return to Colombo, but just curious, what is the company procedure?

Also , when you say "It wasnt a BOMB THREAT. It was just a THREAT" What kind of threat was it? The papers reported it as a bomb threat.

Do you have any more info on the accident with the engineering vehicle?

UL 501

Why have you taken all you postings off? :O Spoil-sport!!! Please come back, dear. I promise not to ask any more embarrassing questions.

Ok, ok, the crew did a wonderful job, all the others, the “trolley dollies and ground donkeys”, to quote your last posting, messed up. Why else would they get the bomb squad to check an aircraft that didn’t have a bomb threat?

By the way, did you say that the “unprofessional ground donkeys” released the aircraft within hours when they should have quarantined it for 48 hours? So for what kind of a threat is this 48 hour quarantine called for? Food poisoning, contaminated fuel or loose bolts (to quote your mail) ???

Oh, dear, dear. Really put your foot in, didn't you?:p

*******

Now the Srilankans seems to have given some inspiration to the Indian Airlines ground staff as well.

Apparently an IC ground vehicle driver decided to some banging around with the ground stairs against the UL A320 which was ready to start at CCJ last Friday morning. APU cover I understand was knocked off not to speak off other significant damage???
