Have to say this is definitely a step up from the current 'charity marching band look' - all they need are batons and instruments.

The buttons on the female jacket are hideous. Could only possibly be paired up with giant lorikeet earings.
The mens suit is too casual, needs a tie for one. Its almost low cost style...
The hat is a step in the right direction, but its WAY too high and can be worn the wrong way too easily.

The pants have too much of a 'nana' cut, dont like the creases at the front.

the colours i dont mind so much - looks a bit dull perhaps out and about in the terminal, but with the new cabins it should compliment it quite well i think...

OH dear dear dear.......anyone else think od Uma Thurman in Gatica?
The femail colour looks like a white top after gein washed with the colours...and yeah no ties!:ooh:

Me thinks the designers have been smoking the local "product"

I quite like the cut of the ladies' jacket - as someone has said it's definitely better than the current one!

The men's suit though......what's so special about it? I mean, it looks like any suit that anybody could wear.... Doesn't really look like a uniform, I see lots of passengers who wear something similar on board , it's just like any casual suit - and not even a tie? mmmmmm...... Not so sure about that either.
:hmm:

Normally I'm a fan of hats but that one is SOOOOOOOOO wrong!!!

The colours would be okay if they had a bright 'wow' scarf & tie to go with... perhaps a nice aqua blue... though it is a bit better than the 'marching band' look.... =)

Uniforms aren't meant to look nice or be flattering. they are there to save u deciding what to wear every day, and for the pax to identify who is staff and who is not!!!!! Get over it

Havent you heard the phrase that if you look good then you feel good. When you feel good then you feel more confident in doing your job.Having seen the picture then that Hat makes the bowler hat look good.

What is wrong with the current AZ uniform? The short Black Skirt of the Winter Uniform looks great especially on women that have long legs.I think the summer dress isnt too bad either but prefer the winter one.The blazer isnt one of the better ones but far better than what they are thinking of changing too.

Think its the worst one Ive seen so far.Why are all the airlines going back to 1960 type uniforms(especially in the hats)Agree they look like they are in Thunderbirds.

As soon as they introduce that then AZ go straight out of my Top 3 and then its either JAL(I think all Black which is pinstripped) or BA will take over there place:D

AZ? Alitalia???

I hope Air NZ's CC find it comfortable to work in, that's all it matters :ok:

...but boy, a HAT??? :{

and for the pax to identify who is staff and who is not

Erm, yeah, I think that was the point someone was trying to make - the male CC will get confused for business travellers!!! :}

EmmaB, enough about trousers already!!! :p ;)

Maybe it's just a 'sneak peek' and we'll see the full uniform soon. I can't see an airline in Aus/NZ not having a skirt option for summer....

The 'wardrobe' option is a good move, though I'm not sure I like the jacket (top?) and skirt being different colours. The Air NZ media section on their web site has more pictures...

To all NZ crew:

I think your new uniform is gorgeous.....

Much better than that 80's number you wore before.

The new one is beautiful, very relaxed, just lovely.....

The male uniform without the tie is so cool... i would love to wear it....

There is so much crap floating around various forums about your new togs....don't take any notice.... the new kit is great... will look brilliant onboard with the new a/c interiors....

SUBTLE AND CALMING....

The small photo given as a means of looking at the new uniforms did not do them justice....try:

http://www.airnz.co.nz/aboutus/mediacentre/pressreleases/airnz_unveils_new_uniform_photos.htm

I will have to wear the new uniform and am reserving my thoughts until I see it and wear it.

From the photos, I do think it is elegant and the hat is optional and therefore can't see it being worn all that much.

Although as I am a CSA I do not have the hat option thank goodness.

Ermmm.....I like the girls uniform. The Air NZ website pix does it much more justice.

Looks like they couldn't have been bothered with the guys uniform though.

Just a quick question though.......The Air NZ website media release goes on about how mauri influenced the uniform is. Now I am far from an expert in mauri matters but this uniform looks about as un-mauri as you could get!

hahahaha.....how unfortunate!!!!
However, to correct Jetteson...ACTUALLY, Uniforms are meant to provide an image of the company! You wear an orange t-shirt and grey combats because you work for a sleek casual lowfares company and your uniform reflects that, I wear a pinstripe suit and tie which has a bit of flair so as to give a clean cut professional, business image with style....Air New Zealands uniform seems to suggest that its an airline run by Frigit nuns!!!!

i just had a look at more photos and still don't like the uniform, i'm sure one of the ladies my grandma hangs around with has the same kind of clothes! the girls uniform is disgusting and the guys uniform is way too casual. I think, considering Air New Zealand is the countries national airline, the men should be wearing ties, no option. It may look better in real life? who knows, but from here, all i can do is laugh and look forward to the next AIR NZ crew i see walking through the terminal. Is the hat optional aswell because i should imagine there's not too many girls that will want to wear it.

Keeperboy...it's spelt "Maori" (but I do concur, I cant quite see the Maori influence?)

Paddy...frigid nun? Is there any other kind? (Other than the pottery exhibits of Nuns and Priests in the AMS sex museum) ;)

Like others I will leave any further opinion until I see it 'in the flesh' but I am afraid the jury is still out.

On the plus side, the mens open neck shirt leaves plenty of space for the gold medallion or perhaps a plastic Tiki!

I was rolling around the floor laughing when I saw the first pic, like Oz I thought it was a joke too!!!

My friend just got knocked back from NZ long haul, this photo should cheer her up. She would have looked rediculous!!!

Having looked at all the other pics, I guess it looks ok, but the hat has got to go! and the boys need ties!!!

it's easy for those of us who work for other airlines to laugh...

I sympathize with our neighbours from NZ. the colours are not the best choice considering how dirty we can get at work and that's not even thinking of the worst possible case scenario, eg projectile vomit! Morrisey had the right idea for QF when he designed our uniforms. dark suits and prints that conceal stains of all varieties. thanks Peter!

the men's NZ uniforms are especially dull. the blue jackets remind me of the coats old men who work in hardware stores wear.

but, as so many have said before me, anything is an improvement on the old uniform. the women's old printed dresses were especially vile.

who designed of the new uniform?

flygirlnz
25th Oct 2005, 13:54
The uniform was designed by Zambesi.

Given that I will be one wearing it, I have reserved my judgement until I see it.

From all of those who went to the launch the feedback has been great. So I do wonder if the photos are not doing it justice.

funbus_flighty

Tie optional. Hat optional. Don't know what the chick in the first photo is doing with the hat, but all other photos i've seen it looks semi-ok. It needs to be worn straight on the head rather than on some funky angle. Worn properly it sits a lot lower.

The guy in blue in the first photo is the CEO so that's not the uniform (I hope).

The Maori design is detailed on the men's shirt and womens wrap.

I do have to say DULL DULL DULL tho. The girls do have a great scarf and personally I'll wear the tie in the terminal and take it straight off when i get on board (the amount of times i've handed over a j/class meal with my tie as a garnish...) they just get in the way!!

I guess looking at the gals uniform (let's face it, airline uniforms are all about the girls anyway) there are options there for all shapes, sizes and ages which is important and finally PANTS!!! (those creases will iron right out).

As far as I know we're in it 1st Jan so you'll all start seeing it in the flesh from then on. :)

Cheers

Funbus

eeeew those colours!! **shudder**

if you were working in j/class or even y/class for that matter, wouldn't you be wearing your jacket or some sort of serving vest/jacket, therefore your tie not going anywhere near the pax's food? jst interested?

No.

There is an apron which can be worn Cafe style or waiters style. It's usually worn waiters style ie. waist down.

probably don't need a tie pin now. Ties optional...YAY!! :)

I do actually wear a tie pin, was just making light of the situation which has been taken quite seriously.

I mean the current one is pretty naff but least it has a splash of colour!!

funbus_flighty,

Wasn't turning your comment into a serious discussion, i just couldn't work out why your tie would be going in a j/class pax food, presuming that you would be wearing a jacket etc in j/class? you have now clarified that point.

ROFL!!! :p :D

Okay actually now I've got over the shock it's not too bad, I mean c'mon they could have one like 'Niki' :E

Still I think it would look better perhaps with some brighter colours in the accessories - whatever happened to Air NZ's trademark teal green (I mean the one in the livery not the one on the old jacket :yuk: ) now if the scarf, hat, belts etc were a brighter green it would probably be ok.....

Looking forward though to hearing what you guys and girls think when you finally get to wear it :)

Lol ok i've looked at it again - i still can't believe it!

An airline uniform is meant to say "LOOK AT ME!! "LOOK AT ME!!"

But i'd just walk straight past it in the terminal. Next time i see the ever friendly ANZ girls i'll give them my condolences!!

As Janice off 'Friends' would say "OH - MY - GOD!"

What in the hell were Zambesi thinking when they designed that hideously ugly thing? It looks like something my nana would wear... come to think of it, think it's her table cloth. And I soooo echo the "Thunderbirds" sentiment.

Vile.

Holy Cr@p!! That's almost as bad as the current QF uniform!! What is going through designers heads these days??

Everyone on here hates the hat, but after seeing more pictures of it, the hat is the only thing I like about the uniform.

Nana's on one side of the Tasman, and black suits and vomit fabric on the other side of the Tasman.

Whenever a new airline uniform is launched I guess we all need to spare a thought for those poor crew working over in the United States at any given airline. In my eyes they will always be the worst dressed.

Oh well, as long as they can get my a$$ out of a burning aircraft if need be, I can live with it.

good day everyone!

animated_freight,

you're one of a very small group that don't actually like the QF uniform. I think it's fine, although parts of it can seem a bit depressive, but overall i think it's nice. There is noooo way you can compare the QF and Air NZ uniform, they're not even close!

I'd love to see what the indigenous community think of you calling their Aboriginal print, "vomit fabric".

Touche OZ!

I'm not the biggest fan of QF uniform myself, but QF link is great in that lovely iridescent red.

Speaking of indigenous prints on uniforms, perhaps one of the reasons why ties will be optional for male employees is not only the fact that economy class is considered 'cafe' and business class considered 'bistro', but also because of the beautiful embroidered Maori design down the centre of the mens shirt. It is also detailed on different parts of the female uniform.

Just a thought.

Fly safe everyone. :O

What I think is hilarious, is the smart a$$ comments myself and other crew have copped about our uniform, coming from NZ crew in their old uniform. Our uniforms are both as bad as each other, but for them to stand there and pay us out is too funny. Especially in the green uniform with pleated skirts down to their ankles and with what it looks like from a distance to be teddy bears printed on the skirt, though on closer inspection I think is a native leaf. And I'm not even going to talk about the off the shoulder scarf.

Case Study:

Lift stops to go down to hotel lobby. Doors open. NZ crew standing in lift. I enter lift in uniform and crew bags that are clearly marked Australian Airlines. Crew look me up and down, eyes narrowed down center of nose. I smile. They don't. One asks what do you do? I reply, the same job as you. They look away. Uncomfortable silence for next 10 floors or so.

It wouldn't be so bad if they commented and had a laugh with you. But when they comment, don't laugh and look away before you can respond it kind of makes you wonder what will they think of themselfves in this latest creation. And I am not going to start on the new uniform.

NZ new uniform. Vile. My opinion does not represent my experience in the lift. I have had many a great conversations with NZ crew. Just must have caught a bad batch on that day.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

funbus_flighty,

i am the opposite and actually think the QF Link uniform is horrible, i don't like the red colour.

Apparently from what i hear, cabin crew are supposed to wear the QF blue uniform that QF ground staff currently wear, but it was changed. Blue uniform for the sky and brown uniform for the ground?
