Passenger falls to his death
14/10/2005 11:22

Johannesburg - A 50-year-old foreigner died in the domestic hall of Johannesburg International Airport on Friday when he plunged off the banister of a moving walkway into the arrivals hall 10 metres below, said the Airports Company of SA (ACSA).
A person had stopped at the end of the travelator walkway in terminal B, causing a back-up of trolleys.

"The gentleman passenger attempted to move around the obstruction by climbing along the railing of the travelator," said ACSA spokesperson Jacqui O'Sullivan.

"The passenger then lost his balance and fell to the arrivals level below."

Airport clinic staff were on the scene in less than a minute but the man, believed to be either Austrian or German, had died.

His family was being contacted and the department of foreign affairs had been informed.

The travelator was shut down for an on-site investigation, said O-Sullivan.

My thoughts EXACTLY THH.

Now strangely SA has been the place at aiports where I have seen the LEAST queueing.

Security at Gatwick South took EXACTLY 1 hour ! Yes the security check at LGW South. This was around 1000 on A friday morning and definatly not a banking holiday or so ... just bad and sad.

RIP fella - hope your mates can learn from this.

A strange accident to be sure but is it not possible that the poor soul was getting squeezed between the stationary trollies ahead and the upcoming stuff behind, thus being forced out onto the handrail as a desperate measure?

Maybe our criticism should be directed at the dildo who caused the whole problem by standing having a chat at the end of the escalator?

People somehow manage to turn into idiots when they get to an airport. It starts when you get to pax drop-off where nobody knows how to park a car any more. Then at check-in where everybody bumps the person's heals in front of them with the trolley. Then blocking escalators or those conveyor belts for the lazy wondering where the exit is. Etc etc etc.

Anybody ever hear those prank announcements where the girl at the information desk gets duped into calling passengers with really absurd names to please come to the information counter. A funny one was " Ivanna Sakjurdik"
There were a whole bunch of these on an audio file somewhere on the net once.
