Powering a laptop in economy class with Singapore Airlines

Hi,

In November I am flying from Heathrow to Melbourne via. Singapore on Singapore Airlines. To pass the time I plan on doing some work on my laptop but I am not familiar with the system that this airline uses. I don't want to wait until I arrive at the airport to find out, I'd rather get it sorted now so if I need any adaptors I can get them before.

Yeh, my laptop battery last 1.5 hours at best! I am dreading this long flight and want to have my laptop powered up so I can surf the net (brother used this facility on an Oz flight with Singapore Airlines and said it worked brilliantly... before his battery died) and play games.

I appreciate that you're joking, DG101, but seriously, there can be issues with carrying spare batteries (they could short and start a fire) - see this thread (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=175989&highlight=battery), or search on "battery" for more info.

If you haven't checked out the SQ web site, the information below is taken from it - it is a matter of searching. They certainly seem to have an enormous IFE choice so hopefully you will be able to keep yourself busy.

"110 V AC in-seat power supply system
Our 110 V AC in-seat power supply system lets you stay connected to your favourite software, games, and music from your laptop for the entire flight. Singapore Airlines offers in-seat power supply systems in First Class and Raffles Class seats on all B747-400 and selected B777-200 Extended Range aircraft. In-seat power supply system is also available on Raffles Class and Executive Economy seats on all A340-500s.
The 110 V AC system supports Australian 2/3-pin, European 2-pin, Japanese 2/3-pin, and US 2/3-pin plugs. An adaptor is required for plugs that are not compatible with the system and it can be purchased from KrisShop on board or via mail order.
15 V DC in-seat power supply system

The 15 V DC in-seat power supply system requires a different adaptor for its use. This is available in KrisShop onboard and it supports various models of laptops from IBM, Toshiba, and Compaq.

For safety reasons and to avoid damage to the laptop, users are advised to remove the battery before using the system and to disconnect their laptops from the system when installing .

Sorry there's no power in the seats in economy class. Also very hard to use a laptop comfortably once the seats recline. Changi airport has areas where you can plug in though so you could recharge your laptop during your stopover.

Internet on board? I was on a QF flight recently when the pax next to me wanted to use his laptop but the battery was dead so one of the F/A's was kind enough to take it up to business class and charge it up there and then bring it back to him when it was done!

but as said most international airlines have quite an extensice IFE system, so you should be fine.

Last time they were trialling the service. I think it was 25USD for the flight. I think the full rate was 35. It might have been $20 and $30 though. Either way too expensive for me. There was an hourly rate as well.
