The time has come for EGPE to have an airfield radar.

Lossie radar closed at weekends, and an Easyjet was number 4 [four] at teatime yesterday. Wisely started to reduce speed on learning that holding was inevitable.

And no, Lossie would not have been able to expedite the flow rate.

As you have said Lossie would not be able to speed up the flow as it is not the Approach service provider. Inverness works on a procedural basis with a landing interval of 10mins between ac carrying out the full procedure. So if no one goes visual and you are number 4 then expect to be flying around in a circle for 40 Mins. This compared with ac doing 180kts on final approach requiring 6nm between them for wake turb, it would take 8mins to shift the same 4 ac (figures used for simple math) using radar.

8 minutes would be pushing it even with 160 kts to 4 miles. The point is that with radar there would have been no delay; used less fuel, with the passengers arriving sooner.

An experienced approach man will be able to improve on 1/10 to probably 1/6 if the timing is right to go outbound at holding altitude for a while.

Next question: where will they all park. You just need a easy to go tech again and space will be at a definite premium.

I quite agree, although procedural based ATC is slow, it is quite fast enough for the facilities at Inverness. It is simplistic to say that if they had radar they would be able to handle more ac; this is simply not true. The concrete limitations at the airport would see to that. The question of radar increasing safety is also a good point to make, but as long as airlines are happy with what they get there will be no impedious for change.

As one Hollywood film stated, "if you build it, they will come". Well they haven't built it so stop bloddy comming.
