I'm looking at the possibility of putting a diesel conversion into a C172 (12months time or after the next AVGAS engine) and would like some personal opinions on the best way to go.

Basically the aircraft is on cross hire being used for Training and Charter - Can mod be done and still used for Training and Charter?

What is the best make/model to look at?

How much (engine & install ready to go)?

Websites to look at companies to call?

Thanks in advance

I did some searching a year ago. Not many "certified" or "STC'd" diesels at that time.
A few were then 'in testing' but with no real indication of when they'd be available. (or at what eventual cost)

You'll probably need a new cowl and to replace everything forward of the firewall at yeeeeooouch $$$$ :ugh:

Gawd knows what hoops CASA will then want you jump through if you still want to use it for training/hire purposes :{

Do a google.

There's a company with certified conversions in OZ. STA(c)? engines, in Lismore. $120k from memory.

Their justification was... around $100k + $50 for an airframe overhaul and paint plus the $50k purchase price of the crappy old 172 gets you an "as new" Diesel aircraft for $50k less than a new one.

With the price of Avgas set to rise... I don't think it will outweigh the $100k conversion cost... I really didn't see the point at the time when I saw it over last new years at Evans Head!
