ABX Asks For International Rights

One of Deutsche Post World Net's domestic U.S. air carriers is asking the Department of Transportation for permission to fly to countries around the globe.

ABX Air on Sept. 22 requested a new air carrier certificate that would give it the potential to greatly expand its service. The Wilmington, Ohio-based carrier asked for the right to move cargo and mail between the United States and dozens of other countries, many of which have open skies agreements with the United States.

Competitors UPS and FedEx already hold such certificates issued by the U.S. DOT. ABX Air is what is leftover after DHL bought the ground operations of Airborne Express in 2003.

If ABX Air is granted the certificate, it would have the ability to move beyond Airborne's routes as a strictly domestic carrier. The certificate does not cover some of the world's biggest markets for air cargo including China, Japan and the United Kingdom.
