Funfair organisers have been asked to drop the word "freak" from one of their sideshow attractions.

Carters Steam Fair has agreed to change the name of the "freak show" attraction it was to lay on in Reading, Berkshire.

The show will now be known as the Original Incredibles after Reading Borough Council raised concerns that its original name might be offensive.

The company, which says the term has historical roots, will change it for the duration of their stay in the town.

Family show

Fair spokesman Joby Carter said freaks shows were a "very important part of funfairs in bygone days".

He added that the show, which features performers from the Circus of Horrors troupe, was aimed at families.

A council spokesman said they had met with Carters to discuss the attraction and a new name had been agreed which they believed everyone was now happy with.

The fair, which boasts many rides

dating back to the early 20th Century, is due to set up in Prospect Park on 8 and 9 October.
