Prang of C 182, 5Y BAM. At Chepgoiben.

It seems the pilot had little idea of the strip when he got there and attempted to land downhill.
Seems he judged the runway wrong and tried to touch down halfway down 03.
He then realized he was running out of space and tried to overshoot.
He lifted off at approx 40 mph and realized he was stalling and was not going to make it out of there.
So, he put it down again an the last few hundred metres of runway and braked.
He went off the end of the runway into the tea.
The aircraft rolled and is heavily damaged.
There were light injuries to the 4 souls on board, but everybody walked away and the plane did not catch fire, although the aircraft had left HKNW with FULL fuel for the one hour flight.

This is an extremely dangerous airstrip and pilots are cautioned to get all details available before landing there.

The strip is high (approx 6900') and it's only 1000 metres long, and of that, some cannot be used. Temperature can also be high.

The alignment of the strip is 03/21. There is a X at each end of the runway.

The strip is made of deep grass. It's damp and very slow.

Runway 03 slopes gradually for the first approx 600 metres.
After that, there is a brow and the slope on the last 400 metres is very steep, into a valley.

About 500 metres after the end of 03, there is a hill of approx 500 feet.

Basicallyif you use the last 300-400 metres of runway (the bit that slopes steeply), you are in deep trouble, because there are no options. You are in a valley.

So, you have to be airborne after the first two thirds, to be high enough to clear the hill!

Fly safe.
