G'day

Does anyone out there fly aircraft for the Red Cross or for any aid/U.N./charity or military purposes?

Is there a listing on this site of all the variety of flying jobs you can get with a typical commercial license?

My girlfriend, 21, wishes to become a pilot but is unsure which field to concentrate on. She wants something adventurous and unpredictable.

Any info appreciated

Thx
Dan

Well, for the next 2 years or so, it doesn't matter a gnats chuff what her plans are as she needs to qualify first. To do that she needs to somehow secure 50 grand worth of beer tokens to qualify. Then she can join the ever growing ranks of newbie pilots all competing for the same elusive job whilst trying to make the loan repayments.

Adventurous and Unpredictable enough?

Gus

The question wasn't 'how does she qualify'. The question was directed to those who are employed in fields other than those most commonly sought after. She needs to be aware of the variety of jobs out there before making a practical, coherent decision.

She is aware of the costs, competition etc etc etc.

Cheers

In which case this is not the most appropriate forum on which to post the question.

In the context of training, it is in the most appropriate place, as different fields may require alternative training modules.

Generally the different routes require the same basic qualification, that is CPL/IR. You can get virtually any job with that and experience. A jumbo pilot has the same CPL/IR as a turbo-prop pilot. The only thing different is the type rating qualification wise. Best to get CPL/IR first before looking at other fields. Maybe float plane or tail wheel endorsements would benefit her for jungle flying with the red cross, but that is a long, long way down. For me, I'll fly anything that gets in the air and for which I get paid for, I can't afford to be choosy or pick a "specialist" area of flying right at the moment.

Also, taking the examples in your question:
Does anyone out there fly aircraft for the Red Cross or for any aid/U.N./charity or military purposes?

Military - Join the airforce. I think the same would be said for the UN (may be wrong though)
Charity work - usually have to have a long affiliation with the Lord in some shape or form.

Otherwise, as Smith has said...

CPL/IR is your base point.
Maybe if she wanted to be an Instructor you could say she doesn't need the IR. In which case CPL/FI rating.

She should join the RAF!
