13 die in Congo air crash

September 10 2005 at 09:50AM

Brazzaville - At least 13 people were killed early on Saturday when an Antonov aircraft from the Democratic Republic of Congo crashed north of Brazzaville, in neighbouring Congo, witnesses at the scene said.

The accident is the fourth crash involving a DRC aircraft since the start of the month.

Witnesses at the crash site, 50km north of the Congolese capital, on Saturday said they had found 13 bodies, including those of the crew, and that there appeared to be no survivors.

The aircraft, operated by the private carrier Air Kasai, was overflying Congo as it travelled from Equator province in northern DRC to the capital Kinshasa, according to the witnesses.

The causes of the accident were unclear, and the aviation authorities were initially unavailable for comment.

It comes less than a week after an Antonov freight aircraft from the DRC crashed in the east of the vast country, killing 11 people.

Well at least the Gov are doing something about it ... Search teams have found the two black boxes from a plane that crashed north of the Republic of Congo's capital, killing 13 people, officials announced on Sunday.

The Ukrainian-built Antonov 26, registered by Air Kasai in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, went down 48km north of Brazzaville on Friday afternoon.

Rescue workers found 13 bodies, including those of the four-person Ukrainian crew, he said. The cause of the crash was unknown.

"The two black boxes were found today," Gerard Guempio, an adviser to the country's transport minister, said on national television.

"They will be flown to the Antonov office in Kiev for analysis," Guempio said.

The plane had taken off from an airstrip in Congo's Equateur province and was bound for that country's capital, Kinshasa, after flying over the eastern territory of the Republic of Congo.

On Friday, Congo's government pulled operating licenses from dozens of the Central African nation's airlines, grounding their planes after a spate of air accidents.

Two planes crashed on Wednesday and Thursday in the east, killing one pilot and injured numerous passengers. On Monday, a Russian-made airplane crashed elsewhere into the forest in eastern Congo, killing seven, including three Russian crew members.
