OK Guys and Gals, what is the big deal with filling out the profile information????

If this forum (fora?) is/are to live up to their title then we need to know whether or not to expend any effort or not in a reply.

As clever or witty as some of the entries are under profile I am at a loss as to why people are unwilling to establish their credentials. One can only assume that that is because they have none worth speaking of.

Lets see some more detail in there please.

As these are anonymous forums the origins of the contributions may be opposite to what may be apparent. In fact the press may use it, or the unscrupulous, to elicit certain reactions.,

None worth speaking of.

BlueDiamond

We need credentials to be clever or witty? :uhoh:

I can see that it might be important when it comes to information but even then, if something is correct, it is correct regardless of who is saying it. If I tell you, for example, that the atomic number of copper is 29, that statement is true whether I have a degree in physics or not.

Conversely, a person's "credentials" or rather their absence, can lead you to disregard information they give ... not because that information is inaccurate, but because you don't think they know what they're talking about. Your mind can become biased or even closed because you are basing credibility on qualifications instead of examining what is being said.

Techman

I supposed you don't have any background relevant to PPRuNe then?

I supposed you don't have any background relevant to PPRuNe then?
What are you basing that supposition on?

Bluey

I do you one better:

Copper, Symbol: Cu, Atomic Number: 29, Atomic Mass: 3.546 amu, Melting Point: 1083.0 ░C (1356.15 K, 1981.4 ░F),Boiling Point: 2567.0 ░C (2840.15 K, 4652.6 ░F), Number of Protons/Electrons: 29, Number of Neutrons: 35, Classification: Transition Metal, Crystal Structure: Cubic, Density @ 293 K: 8.96 g/cm3, Color: red/orange

Want the Isotopes too?

Now, this being an aviation site, what copper alloys, where and to what percentage are they being applied to on aircrafts?

credibility on qualifications instead of examining what is being said

I'm listening on what you'll have to say to my question.

Tarnished if people filled out their profiles as you suggest, what way do you have of verifying that the profiles are filled out truthfully?

The logistics alone of checking everybody's creds would close down the site. The establishing of what parameters to apply to membership would be a quagmire.

The way it is, knowing if you should 'expend effort' comes with experience. :)

The field is so specialised that fakes shine through loud and clear. And PPRuNers are so quick to pounce that fakes don't have a very long shelf life here. On serious threads, the Mods also frequently delete rubbish posts made by FlightSim jockeys & armchair experts.
Between every ppruner using his/her own common sense/specialised knowledge/good judgement and the Mods keeping the place tidy, PPRuNe is the best aviation bulletin board on the net.
(check out some of the others to confirm this! :ooh: )

The board is privately owned by Danny Fyne and he decides who is welcome and who is not.
His philosophy is well documented on these pages, and so far, PPRuNe's not doing too badly under his guidance. ;)

I do not know of one single case here of someone who has been able to consistently and convincingly fake being in aviation while they were not.
We had a sadly infamous case here some years ago of someone trying to do just that; he was exposed rather quickly (even if some people prefered to believe his lies) and spectecularly and ended up in jail.

Airship, when I wrote that post I wondered if I needed to clarify that he did not go to jail for faking to be a pilot but because he was a criminal.
I decided that explaining such would not be necessary in view of PPRuNers' ability to work out for themselves the glaringly obvious.

Obviously, in your case, I was wrong. ;)

Techman,

We get many fakes trying to convince us they are pilots and even professional flight engineers (is there such a thing as an amateur flight engineer?). As Flaps said, they are pretty soon found out by those of us who have a genuine background at various levels.

This being Jet Blast (which has a hard core of regulars you might say) we have a mix of people. Some of them, shockingly, have no background in aviation and choose to come on here for the mixture of debate, humour and the crazed ravings of Onan the Clumsy that only JB can provide.

Long may they continue, PPRUNE is a better place for their presence.:ok:

However perhaps you could choose the smileys you use to signify the intended tone of your post a bit better (something I've been accused of too). Must be the Irish in us, a rather dark, sardonic sense of humour which we expect everyone else to be able to see through. ;)
