Hey all, just been watching a documentary on the crash on swissair 111 where an electrical fire causing smoke in the cockpit enventually caused them to hit the deck. My questions is.... Could the pilots have depressurised the aircraft somehow?? the lack of air at FL200 would surely stop, or at least slow a fire??

This can actually make it worse. I have seen some experiments done by NASA I think where they showed the effects on a cabin/cargo fire when an aircraft depressurises. It was quite frightening the results. Don’t ask me why it does that because I have no idea. You would think the lack of O² would put it out but it didn’t. Maybe the rush of air fans the fire?
