The competition was held yearly in the past, but the tradition faded in the past few years. (I C I left a hughe gap in the market) :E:E:E
17 Squadron in conjunction with DHS decided to host a Chopper
Competition from 22 August till 25 August 2005.
The competition is to determine the operational capabilities of the
SAAF Helicopter Squadrons and to build Esprit de Corps among the
helicopter fraternity.
Monday 22 August 2005: The helicopters from the various squadrons
will be arriving at 17 Squadron.
The squadron's teams will consist of the aircrew and ground crew,
per aircraft type. All members of the teams will participate in all
aspects of the competition, together.
Tuesday 23 August 2005: The participating members will be tested on
general helicopter knowledge, by competing in a quiz, teams will
consist of the aircrew and ground crew from the various squadrons
and aircraft types.
Tuesday 23 August 2005: The teams will then participate in a clay
pigeon shooting competition.
Wednesday 24 August 2005: The teams will be handed a simulated
navigation "call-out" and will then be judged on, accuracy and time,
during the planning and flying phases of the exercise. Aircraft of
the various types will also be competing against each other end
against the other types.
Thursday 26 August 2005: This day will be open to the public. No
entrance fee will be charged. The Northern gates will be opened at
07:00. The competition will commence at 08:00. The competition will
consist of a Letra Course. The course will consist of precision
hovering, cargo sling and hoisting exercises. The competition will
take place on the hard stand between 17 Squadron and the tower.
