Seven killed, one missing in Korea chopper crash
SEOUL, July 5 (Reuters) - Seven people were killed and rescuers were searching rough seas for one missing after a helicopter with 12 people aboard crashed off South Korea's east coast on Thursday.
The helicopter crashed about three kilometres (two miles) off Jinhae city, 400 km southeast of the capital Seoul, at 11:40 a.m. (0240 GMT), police said.
The chairman of South Korea's third largest steelmaker, Dongkuk Steel Mill Co (01230.KS), was confirmed dead, police said.
Kim Chong-jin and three Dongkuk officials died along with the co-pilot and an official from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (42660.KS), which owned the helicopter.
"Maritime police were still searching for one missing but the task is not likely to continue into the night as visibility is very low and the waters are muddy due to heavy rain," Park Dae-myung, a police officer in Jinhae, told Reuters.
Four passengers were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, police reported earlier.
The pilot, one of the crew and two Daewoo officials were rescued but there were no immediate details of their injuries.
Police blamed the crash on monsoon rains that had prompted forecasts for heavy fog and high waves, particularly in the area where the crash occured.
"There was thick fog and heavy rain," the police officer said. "There was thunder and visibility was very low."
The helicopter was heading for Daewoo's shipyards on Koje Island from the southern port city of Pusan.
Police identified it as an S-76 built by United Technologies Corp (UTX.N) unit Sikorsky Aircraft.
