Senior Transport Safety Investigator - STSI (LAME)
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is the government body responsible for the independent investigation of accidents and incidents involving civil aircraft in Australia.
The ATSB is seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual with broad experience in the aviation industry and extensive experience as a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) on general aviation aircraft and Class A systems of maintenance. Experience as a Chief Engineer is desirable. Applicants are required to hold or have held during the previous 24 months, an aircraft maintenance engineering licence issued by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority, with additional ratings to the original licence.
The main duty of the position is to undertake technical investigations into aviation accidents and incidents in accordance with the Australian Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003. Other duties include liaison with various organisations, including the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Airservices Australia, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Australian aviation industry, and undertaking research into various aspects of aviation safety.
Note, on-site investigation of fatal accidents in sometimes harsh conditions is a part of the job.
The position is based in Canberra and is located within the Aviation Safety Investigation team of the ATSB.
The salary range is A$77,790 - A$83,129 for an STSI (EL1) and A$89,052 - A$97,746 for an STSI (EL2). In addition, an Investigator Restriction Allowance at the rate of A$6,240 p.a. will be paid once the new investigator has met certain requirements.
The successful applicant will be expected to undertake technical investigations, liaise with industry, undertake research and compile technical reports. The applicant is also expected to have special qualities that include knowledge of transport safety issues, and skills in analysis, problem solving, report writing, communication, computer applications and teamwork. Training will be provided to the successful applicant leading to the award of a tertiary accredited Diploma of Transport Safety Investigation.
