Hey ya experts! which school in New Zealand provides the best flight training ...PPL to CPL with multi & instrument endorsement.

My advice, only go to flight school as a last resort. Not to sound cynical but after being there, doing that, it left me feeling that I made a mistake.

Firstly the money, getting a loan sounds great but do the sums, a 40k loan paid off at $100 a week will take 12 years and cost $62,000. You see most pilots struggle to get $100 a week once everything else comes out of their teensy weensy pay packet.

But your a business analyst so you probably got some money saved up and don't care.

The theory structure is great, big class makes learning easier, especially when doing IFR, the problem comes when the flying starts. Flying schools are lucky to have more than 1 person with 3 years experience. They are mostly ex students who were in your shoes about a year ago, or less. You wouldn't see someone finish medical school then turn around and teach medicine. There are many things in aviation that don't make sense and that is a big one.

I would simply suggest shopping around for a good aero club, many have top facilities to get you into multi and IFR, you won't feel like they're just pushing you through to make way for the next lot.
Best of all the people have been in the industry for a long time and can teach you more than whats written in a book, they will also help with making contacts to get you in a job once you get what you need.
Flying schools are for those with cash up front and a job to walk into or their own plane, if that is you then go for it. They are all the same. Just remember you are the customer.

Out of south island I would say IAANZ. But do you really want to go to a flight school and just become a number ? I totally aggree with matana22 in saying hunt around for a good aeroclub...

Thanks a ton for the advice guyZ! which aero club would u suggest in AU/NZ preferably where work would be available easy with my profile ...as would like to fly full time & work probably part time...have been lookin at RVAC particularly...but i need ur advice ....a club that is reasonably priced...

Nelson is nice, right in the middle of the country, so it's close to everything (snow and beach) depending on your interests.
The city has pretty good job prospects, especially in summer. As for flying work, its big enough to have some available and small enough so you can get to know people personally.
Just take your time, meet some good people and something will come up.
Queenstown and Wanaka are great places, so get involved in Mountain Flying it's a blast.
And if you'd rather live in a major city then my pick would be Wellington.

Have tried both. Flying School & Aero Club.

The Aero Club wins hands down. At most flying schools you'll soon tire of giving your hard earned cash to a pack of infighting egomaniacs who are paid by the flight hour.

Join a club. You'll see where your money goes (not on maintaining a bunch of 30 year old Traumahawks). And you'll fly with a great bunch of people.

That's been my experiance.

So what your suggesting is not to touch IAANZ or similar and find a club elseware and pay them to teach you?

Just asking as I'm just looking into the same thing as deepbluesomething and im trying to find the relative costs between an Aeroclub and Flight school.

Get online and have a look.

The Aero Clubs would appear to charge less per hour than your average flying school. Also depends on who you want to give your cash to. I've got a problem paying top dollar for clapped out,30 plus year old aircraft that fill with water when it rains. Aero Clubs tend to look after their machines a bit better.

Another reason an Aero Club is more cost effective is the ability to network with other members. And then there's cost sharing. Ask anybody, friends, co-workers, neighbours, clients, pizza delivery guy, hot girl at the bar, whoever. Ask for a bit of money, nobody minds when they know how much it costs to hire a plane, if you put 3 people in a 172 you just flew for free.
Of course there's no law against doing this with a flight school, but for some reason it was frowned upon where I went, seemed the only people I should take with me were other students.

Alright guyz the verdict is that aero clubs win hands down...i got a quote from IAANZ, Nelson aviation college, & coupla others they are way too expensive. I have a list of clubs, has anyone been to any of these:

Any recommendations?? have checked nelson aero club, wellington aero club, marlborough aero club, wanganui aero club, tauranga aero club & new plymouth aero club. all seem to be a tad bit expensive...would like to know how much would you'll invest in a PPL, CPL with multi & instrument endorsement...juz lookin for a ball park figure fellas!
