3 BA/BMed/GB Airbus's plus a number of other jets have diverted into Bournemouth/Southampton due to "Closed R/W due disabled aircraft" at LGW.

Anyone got any knowledge as to what the problem was?

Seems it was closed around 11:30 GMT.

I understand something burst tyres on landing. BAA opened the emergency runway to continue operations.

Factual

Transaero B737 burst nose gear tyre (s) on landing 26L, stopped on runway, emergency services attended on the runway. Only one GA from finals, remainder vectored back to holding. After 40 minutes, 26R opened for reduced capacity operations. Diversions inevitable. Tyre change effected on runway and aircraft towed off runway approx 1 hour after incident. Immediately after tow off, 26L re-opened and normal flow pattern restored.

Air Transat landed 1240, without any incident for your information.

All watched from my vantage point near 26L.

At least one GB Airways A321 diverted to Stansted so that will possibly explain the 757 sightings.

2 x Ezy's went around, not sure about any more.

Some idiot overtook me on the M23 near the LGW exit. It could have caused an accident!

Brakedwell, keep left in future otherwise I'll have to nearly cause another one.

SH

And factual it was 2 GA's (an EZY and a BAL) and it was the MLG that had the burst tyres.

There were some BA (GB) Airbusses and at least one 737 at STN today but none of us saw any 757's.

There was also a cargo DC10 in at around the same time so suspect that may have been a divert.

What with all these and the assortment of wide-bodies starting to come to STN it is beginning to look like a 'proper' airport ;)

The days when Stansted was a "proper" airport have long gone.

Ended when the Skyways Yorks, Hermes and Air Charters Super Traders departed.

Cheers

Thursday (4th August) there was also an FCA A321 Divert from LGW, arrived at around 23:30.

Any ideas why? Was on the ground for around 40mins then positioned back to LGW.

I landed at 2355z, and had held for 20 minutes. Aircraft behind us were being given EATs delaying them upto 30 minutes. The reason being that 26R was being used with the requirement for 11 mile spacing for large aircraft. Aircraft cannot land on 26R if an aircraft with certain wingspan is on J. Thus aircraft clearing 26R have to pedal like the wind to allow next aircraft to land. One aircraft in front of us had to go-around.
