Butch Grafton, President of the Professional Helicopter Pilot's Association (PHPA), is seeking the support of industry professionals, in an effort to improve the safety situation in the Gulf of Mexico.

The following is a generic letter that supporters can send to their Congressional Representatives by visiting the PHPA web site or contacting Butch at [email protected] .

I write to ask you to take action on a very serious safety issue in the Gulf of Mexico.

With over 11,000 people transported by helicopter per day, safe and efficient transportation in the Gulf is critical to the offshore oil industry and to our nation's economy. The helicopter pilots who transport passengers and goods to and from oil platforms in the Gulf work in very dangerous conditions. These pilots must be given the resources and technologies they need to ensure their own safety and the safety of their passengers.

Congress has already directed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to address the lack of communications and weather equipment in the Gulf in the 2003 FAA reauthorization bill. The FAA has a program office that is ready to implement these technology upgrades, known as Safe Flight 21, but the FAA has not requested funds or made any moves to improve the situation in the Gulf.

There have been 62 accidents, with 44 fatalities, in the Gulf since 1998. With natural resource exploration pushing further and further off the coast, the need to address these problems grows every day.

Please support immediate funding to improve communications and weather infrastructure services in the Gulf of Mexico and urge the FAA to implement the Safe Flight 21 program in FY 2007.

44 dead. That's outrageous. Do you know roughly how many of the dead were in N reg machines flying from the US side?

I would assume all of them....as this is directed at the FAA and not the Mexican authorities.

Those figures are appalling! It would not be tolerated over here.

Despite the best efforts of the oil companies and the CAA, we have a much safer regime on the North Sea.

Maybe we can get Logpilot, Gomex, GLS Nightpilot and some of the other GOMERS to help us understand the situation in the GOM.
