Anymore info on ASIC's? I understand that a certain organisation is lobbying for pilots to receive a 'national" ASIC.

Having read the list of airports requiring ASIC's, I have a suspicion that the issue of ASIC's by individual airports is going to be a nightmare.

Furthermore, for us weekend wonders, what are the chances of a friendly staffer being around to issue temporary permits etc at 7.00am on a Sunday morning at say, Broken Hill?

This is the sort of issue that makes me think I'll need to carry wire cutters.

It's easy enough to get an AUS asic card. It must be I've got one.

Care to elaborate please?

Sunfish,

Pretty sure you can get an Australia wide ASIC issued at any major airport. E.g Sydney Airport Corporation can issue one that covers all of Australia.

The only visual difference is that the card would have "AUS" written on it, instead of "SYD" or "MEL".

Or am I missing the point?

TL is quite correct.

Problem is for regional airports nobody as yet has been delegated the task of issueing said cards.

DOTARS say it is the responsibility of the aerodrome operator. As this is often a local council, this is plainly unworkable.

As you have to show up in person to apply and renew said card every two years, this again becomes an exercise in logistics for many.

Also, the new regs state you need the card if you require airside access "frequently". Somewhere between there and here the requirement has blurred to if you require airside access at all...

Anyone care to expand on that one?

not only do only a few major airports have the facilities to issue the cards, but they are charging way above the cost price and some even demanding a $50 deposit for the card ! some are even demanding that you are an operator at that airport .. it is about time that dotrs laid down some rules on this

there is no doubt that the casa card should be able to do the job but it is not even designed to go in anything but the new icao (bless em) licence folder !

then what about the dude that has one for work - can he use that card outside of work related duties - seems at least one employers is saying no - does this mean 2 cards?

can somebody please explain why the colour of an asic is black writing on a red background - this has to be one of the most difficult colour combinations to read - but then maybe you are not meant to read it?

another bit of gos going around is that they are going to even make the print even smaller as for some reason (security??) they dont want the names easily read... geez you have to be joking! once upon a time you could read the name with ease a metre or so away... now you have to have it in your hand with your specs on.

where is all this madness going? and no i am not anti security just anti stupid rules and procedures which do nothing for outcomes!

"Where is this madness going?" God knows..... Tonight I see that Bob Carr down in Sydney is talking about cops doing random searches of bags on public transport. Like that'll stop the terrorists. All Johhny Terrorist now has to do is take a walk with his back-pack down Pitt St at lunchtime. Or just drive his car there... Sharm el Sheikh didn't involve bombers on trains, did it?

Smaller print on ASICs? I would have thought one of the basic ways of confirming the pilots are the authorised crew for aircraft would be for someone to crosscheck: (a) ASIC picture with (b) pilot's face; and crosscheck (c) ASIC name with (d) a crew manifest. So the names should be made easier to read, not harder! Then again, with the notable exception of AKL, such a process simply doesn't go on in this region.... I suppose that's because we've all been security screened and considered not a threat wrt taking control of the aircraft......

I hope this expert in from the UK spells out reality in big, bold letters for the bloody Govts.

a crew manifest
What the hell is that ? I knwo that we are required to carry a PASSENGER manifest, but crew manifest ? never heard of one.

Chief Wiggum,

Precisely.

How does anyone currently know that the techies who walk through the gate, down to the aerobridge, are, in fact, the authorised techies for that flight? And who actually demonstrates that they care?

At least in AKL they do actually have a list of the crew (I think it's a copy of the international Gen Dec). Sorry, yes of course, domestically we have nothing. it begs the question though - why not?

Then again, while we have unscreened ground staff pouring all over the aircraft, who cares?

If you are a member you can go to the AOPA forum to find out that they plan to issue AUS wide ASICS..................................

If you are a member :E

Well, we don't need to sign up to AOPA now that you've told us that, do we? ;)

I got a letter in the mail saying that everyone (airside) will need a ASIC as of the 1st Jan 2006. BUT at gold coast airport GA area i was bailed up and told i needed one now OR ELSE.

Has the date changed for compulsory ASIC's for GA? Can anyone tell me?

Sorry only just got back to this.

I occasionally have to work at Perth airport so my employer pays for my Asic card. When I found out that it would be needed Australia wide (PPL) I simply asked my employer if I could upgrade it at my own expense and was allowed. Can't remember the cost but it wasn't that expensive.

As for smaller lettering it may have something to do with the right to privacy as you should be identifiable to authorised people but that does not mean you should be publishing it to all and sundry.

Imagine some terrorist wanted to get something into an airport. Simply check out peoples ID cards as they walk around the airport. Then with the use of a telephone directory they find addresses and take some poor s0d's family hostage to get whatever taken in. That's the problem with security measures, you usually find that each one introduced brings new twists with it.

:suspect: :suspect: :suspect: :(

As is pointed out, AOPA plan to become an issueing authority.

As this is only a plan at this stage and it takes three weeks at least to issue an ASIC, time is rapidly running out for many to comply by the deadline. The long wait for the photo license should give you some idea.

Ozgrade, ASIC can be airport specific, good for that airport, or an "AUS" card, good for any airport.

Although, that said, a cheap pair of wire cutters is good for just about anywhere, including airports.

This is getting bizarre. YMMb's website states that ASIC's wont be needed for the GA part of it, only the RPt bit.

Consequently they are only issuing ASIC's to people who have a need to be in the RPT area.

Latest advice is that YMEL can issue an Australia wide ASIC on a letter from someone in authority that you actually need it. For anyone who wants to do some air touring (as I do) that sounds reasonable if not necessarily convenient.
