An Israeli man and a South African customs official who allegedly helped him try to smuggle gold jewellery into the country have been arrested at Johannesburg International Airport.
South African Revenue Service spokesperson Adrian Lackay said on Tuesday they had received information about a man trying to smuggle jewellery worth R65 000 into the country.
"The Israeli had two suitcases, but declared only one. Customs officials discovered that the other one contained gold jewellery.
"He was questioned and revealed that one of the customs officials told him not to declare the jewellery. It was also established that the two had been in contact and were communicating via SMS. They were both arrested."
