CapeTalk 567:

Hunter caught smuggling game 7/5/2005

Cape Nature Conservation expects further arrests after busting a game smuggling syndicate. Last week, professional hunter Frank Minnaar was convicted of smuggling more than 1,000 protected animals into the Western Cape. He was fined R750,000 rand or nine years in jail. Seven years and R550,000 of his sentence was suspended for five years. Minnaar and helicopter pilot Gerald Peter were arrested last year after officals caught them red-handed rounding up game in the Karoo, near Murraysburg. Cape Nature Conservation's Paul Gildenhuys says it's a triumph for conservation.

Guys (poachers) like this should be darted several times (the shots are lousy) from a Robbish (the hunt takes long and is painstakingly slow) with a small airgun (the shots are shallow so takes time to take effect) lay in agony for hours (the Robbish and the 4x4 are out of fuel) be manhandled and mishandled (the trucks and cranes are late) be tied into a crate (four times too small) travel for 43 hours (punctures, sand, African roads in general) and be set loose in their new "wanted" environment. Two places comes to mind...Zimbabwe's lowlands or Soweto. Let's see if they'd like it. Neither do the animals they abuse and take for granted.
